Asbestos Exposure in the Military

Asbestos was used on military bases, naval shipyards and in navy ships throughout the 20th century. Almost 30% of all people who are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year are Veterans of the U.S. military. The primary cause of mesothelioma is due to asbestos exposure. Asbestos, due to its heat-resistant, fire-resistant, and durable properties, was commonly used around military bases and on military ships. With a latency period of 20 to 50 years after exposure, a mesothelioma diagnosis from military service-related asbestos exposure more commonly affects veterans, decades after serving our country.

Meet Chris McKean

Chris assists MRHFM clients who have served our country honorably through the process of obtaining VA benefits including service connected disability. As a VA accredited attorney, Chris helps veterans receive VA disability benefits if they have been exposed to asbestos while in the military. MRHFM files VA claims on behalf of our clients at no charge to them.

Help for Veterans with Mesothelioma

If you are a U.S. Veteran and have mesothelioma, you may be entitled to VA disability benefits if you can show that you suffered substantial asbestos exposure while in the Armed Forces. You may also receive compensation if you can show asbestos exposure unrelated to your time in the Service. MRHFM proudly helps mesothelioma victims and their families file a VA disability claim on a no-obligation basis and without any fees being paid to MRHFM. We feel that it is important that we provide this service to our Veterans. Because of ethical obligations, we cannot file the claims when the Veteran is already represented by a lawyer for their mesothelioma claims.

Why file a VA disability claim using MRHFM's Accredited VA Team?

Testimonials

George - Ohio

“I wanted to thank you for all the hard work you and firm did for my dad. I wish he would have been here to reap the rewards of your efforts, but I know he would be happy to know that his kids got something out of this experience. I would rather have him than money any day!!! Anyway, I just wanted to thank you on behalf of all of us.”

Common U.S. Military Exposure

U.S. Army

Army Veterans may have been exposed to asbestos from areas around the base including barracks, motor pools, and operational vehicles.

U.S. Navy

Navy Veterans run the highest risk of developing mesothelioma due to the heavy use of asbestos in ships.

U.S. Air Force

Air Force Veterans may have been exposed to asbestos in planes where the most heat and friction occurred, like brake pads, as well as around the base.

U.S. Marines

Marine Veterans may have encountered asbestos-containing materials in housing units, on ships and in land bases.

U.S. Coast Guard

Coast Guard Veterans may have experienced risks of asbestos exposure while serving on ships, in shipyards, and around the bases.

Shipyards and Asbestos Exposure

Below offers a sample list of shipyards where military personnel and civilian workers were exposed to asbestos. Areas on the ships that were most dangerous were usually in the fire and engine rooms. However, most navy veterans can recall the asbestos insulation that covered pipes and wiring throughout the ship. Some of the personnel most at risk include boilermen, electrician’s mates, enginemen, firemen, machinist mates, pipefitters and shipfitters. Seabees who helped with military construction and the civilian shipyard workers were also at high risk.
